6-Week House-Moving Plan to Make Relocating a Breeze

You’ve found the property you want to move to, and it looks like everything will go ahead as planned (fingers crossed). We’ve got a 6-week house-moving plan, so you don’t have to worry about what to do and when. It’s all outlined right here.

6 weeks to go

  • Get removal quotes. Make sure they have the credentials to make your house move as stress-free as possible.
  • Now is also a good time to think about decluttering. It will ultimately save you time. Every item you throw out now is one less thing to pack and find a new home for in your new abode.
  • Once that’s done, you can crack on with a full room-by-room inventory.
  • Some fragile items, such as a grand piano or an antique painting, may need to be transported separately or require specialist handling. It’s important to discuss this with any prospective removal company to make sure they can give your items the care and attention they deserve.

4 weeks to go

  • Confirm your moving date and book your removal.
  • Book time off work for the move.
  • Cancel subscriptions, pay bills, and transfer services with your main suppliers.
  • Pack non-essential items.

2 weeks to go

  • Use up any leftover food in your fridge or freezer. You may also have perishable items in your kitchen cabinets.
  • Arrange a postal redirect with Royal Mail.

1 week to go

  • Defrost your freezer.
  • Update important contacts with your new address. This includes dentists, GP, banks, schools, work, etc.
  • Get important paperwork together in a secure folder or box. This includes passports, bank statements, legal documents, deeds, etc.
  • Make sure all keys, including those for patio doors and windows, are collected together and ready to be handed over to the new owner.
  • Do a deep clean.
  • Label boxes.

1 Day to go

  • Prepare an overnight bag with some essential items you need. This will include bed sheets, pyjamas and toiletries.
  • Moving day
  • Check meter readings.
  • Check all windows and doors are secure.
  • Vacuum your floors one last time.

Time to get preparing

We hope this checklist will help put you at ease when it comes to preparing for the big day. House moves can be stressful, but the removal shouldn’t be a part of that. Choosing the right company is crucial. Hallam Removals is a top-three-rated removal company for Sheffield and surrounding areas.
